Beyond The Curriculum

The MFL department offers the Language Leadership Award and the project Lost in Translation:

  • The Language Leadership Award will be providing our students in years 7,8,9,10,11,12 the opportunity to develop leadership skills through languages and language teaching. The programme will enable students to learn and practise the skills involved with leading learning in a classroom, and our Language Leaders will plan and deliver language lessons to local primary and KS3 classes.  Why become a Language Leader? Becoming a Language Leader will reward your language learning, and provide you with the opportunity to use your language skills practically. You will be able to develop a better understanding of how people learn effectively. Becoming a Language Leader will also improve your communication, evaluative and analytical skills, as well as your confidence.

  • Lost in translation is a creative project engaging our A level students creatively in the complexities of translation. In preparation for creating a video-based project student explore common elements of language that can be lost when translating from language to another, and how elements are added for clarity. In addition to being an excellent preparation for the translation elements of the A Level examinations, this project offers the students the chance to use the target language in a creative way

Facilities

  • All language lessons are taught in the Modern Foreign Languages Block. Every classroom has an interactive whiteboard and audio equipment. The department uses a range of interactive language software including Task Magic, Boardworks and Active Teach. The computer rooms are also available to book where students can work independently using the various language website the department subscribes to.

German

Beyond The Curriculum

The German team run an annual residential trip to Berlin during enrichment week in July. We have recently started an exchange with a German school and we keep expanding the department. For the first time this year, we are running a weekend trip to Cologne to visit the Christmas markets.

Facilities

A range of standard office software and specialist software to support lesson delivery is used, for example Activeteach. All classrooms have interactive whiteboards.  We have a computer suite available for booking.
