At Barton Court, our aim is to foster positive attitudes towards mathematics - enjoyment, interest, confidence, motivation, perseverance and an awareness of the relevance of this very important subject.
In years 7 – 11 students are set according to their ability. Each term the groups are reviewed and changes made based on teachers’ assessment of students’ examination results, class work and homework. Students are well informed of their current levels of achievement and take an active part in reviewing their own progress and setting targets.
Resources
The department is well resourced. Students are using up to date text books and a wide variety of software is used on interactive whiteboards in all mathematics classrooms. A range of activities are included in lessons e.g. puzzles, games, investigations, practical tasks as well as demonstration by examples, question and answer sessions, discussion and practice.
Beyond The Curriculum
A wide range of enrichment activities are offered throughout the year. Enrichment Days allow students to explore mathematics through problem solving, team games and practical activities. We enter students for the UKMT National Mathematics Challenge competitions at Junior and Intermediate levels with encouraging results. We also take part in UKMT Team Challenge. Homework and booster sessions take place after school and teachers and Year 12 students are there to give students individual help. Clubs for mathematics enrichment and gifted and talented students run weekly.
