The History Department

Key Stage 3

The department delivers the National Curriculum in Years 7 and 8.  In Year 7, we begin with an introduction to the skills required in studying history. Our students use these skills to analyse and interpret key events from 1066 until World War One.  We adopt a chronological approach to the study of History so that students are able to build a coherent picture of the past. We look, amongst other things, at the role of women in the Middle Ages, the relationship between the British people and the monarchy, religious conflict, revolutionary forces in Europe, industrialisation, the Slave Trade and the Holocaust.

We encourage our students to be analytical and to evaluate the importance of events and the role of important individuals.  Throughout KS3, there will be regular assessments which will examine their progress in factual recall, essay writing, research and the interpretation of historical sources.

Key Stage 4

GCSE History is a popular option at KS4 and students begin the course in Year 9.

Our subject is part of the English Baccalaureate qualification.

The examination board is Edexcel and the course contains the following topics:

  1. Weimar and Nazi Germany 1918-1939.
  2. Superpower relations and the Cold War, 1941-91.
  3. Early Elizabethan England 1558-1588.
  4. Warfare through time, c.1250-present.

These topics cover a range of skills, including source analysis, in-depth understanding and physical historical interpretations.

All students have their progress assessed regularly throughout the course in timed assessments and a comprehensive programme of booster sessions is available for all students across the range of ability.

Key Stage 5

We offer A2 History through the AQA examination board. There are 3 units:

  1. Britain 1951-2007, examining social and political change and Britain’s foreign affairs through the period.
  2. Germany 1871-1991, examining the extraordinary history of this country.
  3. A 3000-3500 word Historical Enquiry on a subject of the student’s choice.

History is a prestigious, academic subject, valued highly by the best universities. We have been pleased to send students to read History at prestigious universities including Cambridge, University College London and many other Russell Group establishments.

Beyond The Curriculum

The department runs several extra-curricular trips, including a week long study visit to Berlin in Year 10/12 and offers an extensive range of booster sessions for all our students.  We have an enthusiastic History Prefect Team working to develop our extra–curricular provision. There is a Horrible Histories Club for Year 7 and 8 pupils after school on a Tuesday. We are particularly keen to make the most of opportunities provided in our historically important city.
