Secondary Free School
EXCITING PROPOSAL FROM BARTON COURT ACADEMY TRUST;
A NEW SECONDARY SCHOOL FOR CANTERBURY
The Barton Court Academy Trust is pleased to make available the summary of the Free School Consultation. The report can be downloaded here.
Barton Court Academy Trust (BCAT) is preparing a Free School bid to open a 5 Form Entry Mixed Secondary School, on our adjacent site. We propose to submit the bid in September 2016.
What are we proposing?
To open an outstanding 5 Form Entry all ability range secondary Free School for Canterbury and the local area by 2019. Our Free School will work together with its partner school Barton Court Grammar School to provide an outstanding, high quality education in an inclusive and aspirational environment.
In BCAT schools students are supported, inspired and challenged to achieve their very best in all they do in order to reach their full potential and academic success. Students develop into independent, confident, open-minded, life-long learners ready for the challenges of the 21st Century. They will develop into resilient, well-balanced, articulate, principled and responsible global citizens, with cultural and international awareness, who positively contribute to our School and the wider community.
Why do we want to open a free school?
There is considerable demographic pressure on secondary school places from 2017 onwards. A new 5 Form entry secondary school will be needed for Canterbury and the local area by 2019.
BCAT has been asked by the DFE to become a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) and a sponsor for other local schools. Barton Court Grammar School is an outstanding co-educational grammar school and has the capacity and track record to bring other schools, such as The Charles Dickens School into our Trust and our Trustees wish to bring a new provision into our MAT so we can share our expertise across three schools.
The former Chaucer School is adjacent to Barton Court and we feel this offers an exciting opportunity to open a new provision which from day one will work seamlessly with an outstanding school to ensure its success and popularity.
We will offer a range of opportunities across the sites, such as a Gifted and Talented programme and a “mentoring and buddy schemes” of pupils from our Free school by Barton Court students, including our Sixth Formers.
We can offer a unique opportunity for local families to provide high aspirational education utilizing our Trust and also drawing upon our local world heritage status working in partnership with the Cathedral, museums and the Marlowe Theatre to inspire children in their learning beyond the classroom.
