Songs

Words to Encourage You to use Songs in MFL Learning

  • Use songs as a routine to "set the scene" or end a session eg. "Salut, bonjour," "Au'revoir, adieu" etc or in a "real situation" ie The French Grace before lunch.
  • Learn and practise well known French Songs. Rehearse for a performance in assembly. Make it seasonal or topical eg Harvest Festival, Christmas, Easter, Spring etc.
  • Use well known English tunes to practise new vocabulary. Ensure there is lots of repetition. Use Question/Answer technique sometimes.
  • Add a fun element - actions, clapping, a nonsense word or sound. Add an Oh là, à! or a "Youpi!"
  • Be creative. Be adventurous. But take care with the rhyme and scansion.
  • Make up a rap. Not all songs have to have a tune! Nor do they have to rhyme.
  • Use songs as a "Listening Exercise" instead of exercising your own lungs. ie. Target specific vocabulary and demand different responses, eg lundi - stand up, dimanche - sit down. Then make it more complicated by adding: mercredi - turn around, vendredi - touch your nose etc.
  • But, above all, have structured fun!!!!!
