Clubs and Societies

We aim to make the learning of languages fun and enjoyable in curriculum time and through the clubs and societies on offer at the end of the School day. The range of activities includes:

Greek Club is a beginner activity and looks at both language and culture.

Bamboo Structure

Japanese takes place alongside the GCSE group and allows taster experiences in the formation of the alphabet and culture as well as oral language skills.

German runs in the same way as Japanese, as described above.

Language Drama Club - students get involved in drama activities through a modern language, some innovative and compelling scripts/performances.

Language Story Book - this is an ICT Activity that records events through image and film, the finished products can be displayed on the language screens in Reception.

Sign Language Club - both adults and students are able to learn the rudiments of the signing language to communicate more effectively with the hearing impaired.

Students also have the chance to use our games as well as computer facilities, watch films and read foreign magazines. Booster Clubs for exam classes are also offered to boost students' confidence, particularly in speaking, throughout the year.

Foreign foods

In the last year we have also held Gifted and Talented competitions in Food Practical where students have used French and Spanish recipes in the target language to produce some delicious outcomes and a Prose/Essay activity where the outcomes have been submitted into a national judgment arranged by the British Council. Students in Year 7 participate in an annual competition to design the front cover for two publications that are given to new entrants to the School, reflecting Barton Court as a Language College.
