Content

This is a Literature Course

Fifteen texts studied, five of which are World Literature texts in translation. All literary genres are covered including literary non-fiction such as Biography and Travel Writing. A Shakespeare play is a compulsory text. Classical and contemporary literary texts are studied.

Assessment

Internal assessment: 20% written coursework, 30% oral coursework comprising a formal presentation and a taped interview externally moderated by the IBO.

External assessment: 50% examination

Paper 1: Unseen critical appreciation 25%
Paper 2: Based on a group of 4 texts studied: poetry, drama or prose 25%.

Comparative Literature is a fundamental part of A1 English. Both the written coursework and one of the examinations compare texts. The range of texts is immense and takes into account wide ranging thematic or historical trends in Literature. Students will develop skills in a wide range of oral styles as well as written critical analysis. They will leave with a love of World Literature, alongside their love of their own cultural literary heritage.
