Mathematics Department

Introduction

We aim to foster positive attitudes towards this important subject, such as enjoyment, interest, confidence, motivation, perseverance and an awareness of the relevance of Mathematics. Furthermore we believe it is important that students have an understanding of the mathematics involved with real-life situations such as mortgages and credit cards. This will also enable students to perform at the highest level in public examinations. Most students will also gain a G.C.S.E. in Statistics in addition to Maths.

Maths squares

We aim to help students become independent learners as far as possible and self-assessment is at the heart of this. In lessons, learning objectives and key words are made clear to students. We use a variety of dynamic activities as 'lesson starters', including games, puzzles etc. Lessons are highly interactive with all students being encouraged to participate orally and receive constructive feedback and praise. Students are encouraged to write a self-assessment for each objective at the end of lessons and to complete evaluation sheets following examinations. In years 7 to 11 students are set according to their ability. Each term the groups are reviewed and changes made based on teachers' assessment of students' examinations, class work and homework.

Resources

The department is very well resourced. Students are using up to date text books and staff use a variety of software on their interactive whiteboards. Computer rooms are used extensively to enable students to work at their own pace and to take their learning further than the specified objectives. They sometimes do homework using www.mymaths.co.uk; an excellent resource which the students enjoy using. The school pays for them to have full access to this website from any Internet connection and students log in using their own account details and password so all progress can be recorded and rewarded.

Assessments

X Y Z

Students are tested each term using common examinations across the year groups. The dates of these examinations and an outline of the topics covered are made known to students in advance so that they have the opportunity for learning and revision. The results are recorded and used to track the progress of individual students. Each student is made aware of their current National Curriculum level (key stage 3) or GCSE grade (key stage 4), their predicted level/grade and their target. Homework is set, marked and discussed each week and all students have information on how assessments are made.
