Introduction

The English Department offers a range of experienced and specialised staff who cover a range of areas including Key Stage 3 English, GCSE English Literature, GCSE English Language, GCSE Media Studies, GCSE Theatre Studies, International Baccalaureate English, International Baccalaureate Film Studies, and International Baccalaureate Theatre Studies. In addition we also teach Latin and Drama to Year 7 and Year 8 students.

The Department is also actively involved in other areas of School life such as overseeing the School Magazine, "Courtside", running a very successful Debating Team in the Sixth Form and running Enrichment Activities activities such as Film-making (click here to download the lake film (5.3mb)). We are also heavily involved with the International Baccalaureate as members of the team are responsible for the Theory of Knowledge part of the course and overseeing the Extended Essays of all the IB students.

We pride ourselves on the range of trips and activities that we undertake and these include trips to The Somme and Ypres for Sixth Formers, regular Theatre Visits (both local and in London) for productions of plays such as "To Kill a Mockingbird", "Dracula", "An Inspector Calls", "Journey's End", "Romeo and Juliet" and many others. All Year 11 students visit Westminster Hall for a Poetry Day in which they get to meet many of the poets that they are studying. Younger students visit Dicken's World and other educational trips such as Theatre visits. We regularly entertain theatre groups in school who perform their plays to our students. Recent examples are "Macbeth", "Much Ado about Nothing" and "Romeo and Juliet".

We also regularly host visits from visiting authors.
